Color B – Black (≈ 150 yd / 140 m)

🧵 Abbreviations (US terms)

  • MR – magic ring
  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – 2 sc in next st (increase)
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • BLO – back loop only
  • FO – fasten off

🟡 Color-Change Game Plan

We’ll use tapestry crochet in a spiral round: keep the unused color snugly carried inside your stitches so it’s invisible on the right side.

  1. Before finishing the last pull-through of the current stitch, drop Color A and pick up Color B, yarning over with B to complete the stitch. The new color is now on your hook ready for the next sc.
  2. Keep the idle strand taut but not tight—lay it across the tops of the previous round and enclose it as you sc so there are no floats on the back.
  3. Use a locking stitch marker at the round’s first stitch to keep track; tapestry motifs can hide the spiral join.
  4. When the black motif finishes, switch back the same way. Snip and weave only when the color won’t be used for ≥ 10 stitches; otherwise keep carrying.

🖤 The Pattern

Tip: Work Rounds 1–7 entirely in Yellow (A) to build the blank canvas, then begin reading the Bat chart (included below) on Round 8. Each square = 1 sc. You’ll crochet in a clockwise spiral, so read the chart right-to-left on odd rounds and left-to-right on even rounds for correct orientation.

Rug Base (continuous spiral)

RndInstructionSt Count
1MR, 6 sc6
2inc x 612
3(1 sc, inc) x 618
4(2 sc, inc) x 624
5(3 sc, inc) x 630
6(4 sc, inc) x 636
7(5 sc, inc) x 642

Continue increasing 6 stitches per round using the formula (prev inc spacing + 1 sc, inc) x 6 until you reach Round 20 = 120 sts.

Integrating the Bat-Signal (Rounds 8–20)

Below is an at-a-glance color map for the key rounds (A = Yellow, B = Black). Numbers show how many consecutive sc to work in that color before switching.
(The motif is mirrored left/right, so the second half of each round repeats the counts in reverse.)

(Full printable chart: copy this table into graph paper or a spreadsheet, then mirror counts for the second half of each round.)

Border

  1. BLO sc around in Black (B) – 120 sts
  2. Repeat Round 21 once more, slip stitch to first st, FO. Weave in ends neatly under the border.

✂️ Finishing Touches

  • Lightly block the rug by steaming or spraying, then pin to a perfect circle and let dry.
  • Use dots of hot glue on the back for a no-slip grip if placing on hardwood.
  • Weave all yarn tails into the carried strands for an invisible finish.

💡 Customization Ideas

  • Supersize it: Keep increasing past Round 20 to make a giant statement rug.
  • Mini-rugs or chair pads: Stop after Round 14 and finish the border early.
  • Color swap: Try teal + black or neon green + purple for a comic-book pop.
  • Appliqué method: If tapestry crochet feels fiddly, crochet the circle solid yellow, then surface-crochet or stitch a separately made black bat appliqué on top.

Your heroic new rug is ready to guard the floor against cold toes—and villains! 🦇🧶
